Waste factor: Straight layouts waste ~10% (cuts at walls). Diagonal adds 15%. Herringbone adds 20%. Complex room shapes with many cuts should use the higher waste factor.
Box coverage: Most laminate and vinyl comes in boxes covering 20-25 sq ft. Tile is sold by the sq ft or by the box. The calculator rounds up to full boxes since you can't buy partial boxes.
Underlayment: Required for laminate and most engineered hardwood floating installations. LVP often has built-in underlayment. Tile uses thinset mortar instead.
