Volume: Length x Width x Depth converted to cubic feet, then to cubic yards (for bulk delivery) and bags (for retail purchase).
Soil mixes: Mel's Mix (from Square Foot Gardening) is the gold standard for raised beds: equal parts compost, peat moss/coco coir, and coarse vermiculite. It drains well, holds moisture, and is nutrient-rich from day one.
Settling: Fresh soil settles 10-15% in the first season. The calculator adds 10% to account for this. Top off with compost each spring.
